Charity event
To organize a charity event where music is used, permission from the Estonian Authors’ Society is required, as it constitutes the public performance of music. Public performance of music, regardless of the event’s purpose, requires a license according to copyright law.
EAÜ recognizes two types of charity events:
- Concert or other event involving the public performance of musical works, where 100% of the proceeds are used for charity (supporting those in need or achieving a societal goal) and this has been publicly announced. The event is advertised as a charity event.
For this type of charity event, the organizer can agree with EAÜ that the license fee payable to EAÜ will also be directed toward the charity associated with the event. - Concert or other non-profit event involving the public performance of musical works that promotes socially beneficial behavior (e.g., traffic safety, disease prevention, health protection), environmental protection, or other charitable causes, provided that the event is publicly accessible, free of charge, and not for profit.
For this type of charity event, the organizer does not need to pay EAÜ a license fee if the performers do not require a performance fee. If performers are paid, the authors of the performed works are entitled to receive royalties (license fees) via EAÜ, and the event will be licensed according to its type.
To conclude a license agreement for a charity event, please contact EAÜ’s Public Performance Licensing Department.
